Any of a group of short-chain carbohydrates and polyhydric alcohols that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and rapidly fermented by bacteria in the large intestine, and which occur esp. in some cereals, pulses, and fruit. Frequently attributive.Reduction of dietary intake of FODMAPs has been supposed by some to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
