Forms: 1600s focadge, 1600s–1800s focage; also Scottish pre-1700 focage.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French focage; Latin focagium.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman focage hearth tax (late 14th cent. or earlier), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin focagium hearth tax (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources), fuel (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin focus (see focus n.) + -agium -age suffix. With later use compare feuage n.
Obsolete.
In earlier use: fuel. In later use historical: a tax on a hearth or domestic fire, imposed by Edward the Black Prince (1330–76) on Aquitaine; = feuage n.
