Etymology: < ankle n. + -ed suffix2.Currency in Old English may be implied by the following attestation of cleonede, if it shows a transmission error for *anclēowede, perhaps with the meaning ‘having large or prominent ankles’ (the word translates a rare post-classical Latin derivative of classical Latin tālāris of or relating to ankles):OE Antwerp-London Gloss. (2011) 103 Genosus, cneowede, telaricus, cleonede, calcaneus, honede.
