Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀκουστικόν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀκουστικόν, neuter singular (used in ancient Greek to denote the faculty of hearing) of ἀκουστικός acoustic adj. Compare earlier otacousticon n. With the use as adjective compare earlier acoustic adj. O.E.D. Suppl. (1933) gives the pronunciation as (ăkɑu·stikǫ̆n) /əˈkaʊstɪkən/.

Any of various devices used to assist hearing or amplify sound. Also figurative. Cf. earlier otacousticon n. Now rare.
