Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anergia; Greek ἀνεργία.
Etymology: < scientific Latin anergia (1826 or earlier) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἀνεργία idleness < ancient Greek ἄνεργος not done ( < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἔργον work: see erg n.1) + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare anergy n. and parallels cited at that entry.
Chiefly Psychiatry.
Loss or lack of mental or physical energy, esp. as manifested in inactivity or disinclination to act; = anergy n. 1.
