Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin anencephalus ; Greek ἀνεγκέϕαλος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anencephalus (1721 or earlier) or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἀνεγκέϕαλος without a brain (Galen; < ancient Greek ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἐγκέϕαλος brain: see encephalos n.) + -ous suffix.Compare French anencéphale, adjective (1814 or earlier; 1787 or earlier as noun), and also Italian aencefalo (1810 or earlier).

Affected by anencephaly (congenital absence of most of the brain and cranium); of, relating to, or of the nature of anencephaly; = anencephalic adj.
