Designating an electrical system used (instead of mechanical connections) to control the flight of an aircraft or spacecraft; involving or relating to such a system. Also: designating a vehicle controlled by such a system. Cf. drive-by-wire adj.In a fly-by-wire system, the operation of the controls by the pilot is translated by an electronic interface into the movement of control surfaces (such as the rudder, ailerons, etc.) of the aircraft.
