Etymology: < free adv. + falling adj. Compare German frei fallend (1830 or earlier). Compare later free fall n.The concept of unimpeded motion in a vacuum is discussed by Galileo, in chapter 10 of De motu antiquiora (1590).
That falls or drops without check or restraint; that hangs down loosely; spec. that falls or moves under the influence of gravity alone, without either propulsion or drag; that is in free fall. Also figurative.
