Etymology: < classical Latin anthypophora (in rhetoric) reply to a supposed objection < Hellenistic Greek ἀνθυποϕορά < ancient Greek ἀνθ- , variant (before an aspirate) of ἀντι- anti- prefix + ὑποϕορά hypophora n. at hypo- prefix 2. Compare Spanish antipófora (early 15th cent.).In β. forms with alteration after anti- prefix.

Rhetoric. Now chiefly historical.

The refutation (with an answer or qualifying statement) by a speaker or writer of a potential objection or counter-argument which has just been anticipated and stated by the speaker him- or herself. Also occasionally: the whole rhetorical figure in which such an objection is raised and then refuted in this way.
