Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: anthropo- comb. form, -sophy comb. form.
Etymology: < anthropo- comb. form + -sophy comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin anthroposophia (1603 or earlier). In sense 2 after German Anthroposophie (1904 or earlier in this sense in Rudolf Steiner; 1727 or earlier in uncertain sense, perhaps ‘treatise concerning human knowledge’). Compare French anthroposophie (c1910 in this sense, after German; 1793 in sense ‘knowledge of the nature of human beings’). Compare theosophy n. 2.Compare also: 1650 T. Vaughan (title) Anthroposophia theomagica: or a discourse of the nature of man and his state after death; grounded on his Creator's proto-chimistry.
1. The knowledge of the nature of human beings, esp. with regard to spiritual or psychological matters. Also: human knowledge or wisdom. Now rare.
