Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin anthrōpophagus, anthrōpophagī.
Etymology: < classical Latin anthrōpophagus cannibal (usually in plural anthrōpophagī) < ancient Greek ἀνθρωποϕάγος man-eating, cannibal < ἄνθρωπο- anthropo- comb. form + -ϕάγος (see -phagous comb. form). Compare Middle French antropophage, entrophophage (both 15th cent. in isolated attestations), antropofage (1531), Middle French, French anthropophage (1562), Spanish antropófago (1503), Italian antropofago (a1367).With α. singular and γ. plural forms compare -phage comb. form and Middle French, French anthropophage . In β. plural forms after the Latin plural form. In α. plural forms (in quots. a1544, 1579) after the Spanish plural form antropófagos.
