Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀνθρωποϕάγος (see anthropophagus n.) + -ism suffix. Compare French anthropophagisme fact of decimating a population (1794 in an apparently isolated attestation), cannibalism (1830 or earlier). Compare earlier anthropophagy n.
