Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anthropopathia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anthropopathia human sentiment (1539 or earlier) < Byzantine Greek ἀνθρωποπάθεια humanity < Hellenistic Greek ἀνθρωποπαθής ( < ancient Greek ἀνθρωπο- anthropo- comb. form + -παθής : see -path comb. form) + -ια -y suffix3. Compare Middle French anthropopathie (1602), and also Old Occitan antropopatos (14th cent.), Middle French antropopatos (1466).
The attribution of human feelings and emotions to something other than a human being, esp. to God; an instance of this.
