Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin anthropomorphos , -ous suffix; Greek ἀνθρωπόμορϕος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anthropomorphos (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἀνθρωπόμορϕος of human form ( < ancient Greek ἀνθρωπο- anthropo- comb. form + -μορϕος : see -morphous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare later andromorphous adj. With sense 2 compare earlier anthropomorphously adv.
