Compare post-classical Latin acculpare, accupare (frequently from 1246 in British sources; probably < French), Old Occitan acolpar.

Etymology: Probably < an unattested Anglo-Norman or Middle French form *acouper in sense ‘to strike (a person or thing)’ < a- a- prefix5 + couper cope v.2 Slightly earlier currency is probably implied by acouping n. Compare cope v.2 and later coup v.3
