Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Anthocyanin.
Etymology: < German Anthocyanin (1857 or earlier), apparently < Antho- antho- comb. form + Cyanin cyanin n., perhaps as an alteration of Anthocyan anthocyan n. Compare earlier anthocyan n., and also earlier anthoxanthin n.With the form anthocyanine compare -ine suffix5, and also French anthocyanine (1864 or earlier; also anthocyanin (1867 or earlier)).
Chemistry.
Any of a class of blue, violet, or red flavonoid pigments occurring in plants. Cf. anthocyanidin n.The anthocyanins are glycosides of the anthocyanidins.
