Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French anthinon; Latin anthinum; Latin anthinus.
Etymology: As noun partly (i) < Middle French anthinon (1562 in the passage translated in quot. 1601 at sense A.) < ancient Greek ἄνθινον , neuter (compare ancient Greek ἄνθινον μέλι flower honey) of ἄνθινος (see below), and partly (ii) < post-classical Latin anthinum (1634 in the passage translated in quot. 16581 at sense A.), use as noun (short for classical Latin mel anthinum flower honey) of neuter of anthinus (see below). As adjective < classical Latin anthinus made from flowers < ancient Greek ἄνθινος of or like flowers < ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.) + -ινος -ine suffix2. With use as noun compare classical Latin mel anthinum flower honey (Pliny), ancient Greek ἄνθινον μέλι flower honey, ἄνθινον ἔλαιον oil of lilies, Hellenistic Greek ἄνθινον οἶνος wine flavoured with flowers.
