单词 acouchi
释义

acouchin.1

Brit. /əˈkuːtʃi/, U.S. /əˈkutʃi/
Inflections: Plural acouchies, acouchis.
Forms: 1700s–1800s akouchi, 1700s– acouchi, 1700s– acuschy, 1800s– acouchy, 1900s– acushi.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acouchi.
Etymology: < French acouchi, agouchi, apparently < a word in a Tupi-Guarani language of Guyana, cognate with Guarani akutí agouti n. and corresponding to the Cariban words cited at accouri n. (see note). Compare earlier agouti n. (although this denotes a different, but related animal). It is unclear whether the word originated in a Tupi-Guarani or a Cariban language, as there has been much borrowing between these groups in the field of plant and animal names. The words agouti n., accouri n., and acouchi n.1 reflect borrowings into European languages of mutually related words denoting the same kind of animal from three different local languages. The distinction between agouti (or accouri) and acouchi as more specific mutually exclusive names for different animals was introduced by European naturalists (compare quot. 1780). With the form acuschy compare classical Latin acushy, former specific name of Myoprocta acouchy (formerly Dasyprocta acuschy).
Either of two or more Amazonian rodents of the genus Myoprocta (family Dasyproctidae), which are related to agoutis but are smaller and have a short tail. Also called tailed agouti.
