Etymology: < post-classical Latin anthelion (1542 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek ἀνθήλιον , use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek ἀνθήλιος , (Ionic) ἀντήλιος opposite to the sun < ἀντι- anti- prefix + ἥλιος sun (see helio- comb. form). Compare earlier parhelion n.In form anthelium after post-classical Latin anthelium (1728 or earlier).
1. A faint luminous halo, spot, arc, or arrangement of arcs occurring opposite the sun on the parhelic circle. Cf. parhelion n. 1.
