Etymology: Of unknown etymology. There is a remarkable coincidence of sense with French flanier slightly concave (said of a grindstone), according to Hatzfeld & Darmesteter < flan tart, flawn n.; but it is difficult to assume a parallel derivation for the English dialect word.
