Forms: Middle English flamyn(e, ( flaume), Middle English–1600s flamin(e, 1600s flammin(g, 1600s– flamen.
Etymology: < Latin flāmen, of doubtful etymology; some modern scholars believe it to stand for *flādmen, < flād- < West Aryan *bhlād- as in Gothic blôt-an, Old English blót-an to sacrifice; others regard it as standing for flāgmen, < root flāg- to burn (from burning sacrifices).
1. Roman History. A priest devoted to the service of a particular deity. †flamin diall= Latin flamen dialis, the flamen of Jupiter.

3. The Latin flamen and archiflamen (see arch-flamen n.) were used by Geoffrey of Monmouth to denote the two grades of alleged sacerdotal functionaries in heathen Britain, whose place was taken on the conversion of the island by bishops and archbishops. Hence pseudo-Historical in English writers.
