Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Apparently partly formed within English, by clupping or shortening. Etymons: French fluate ; fluosilicate n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French †fluate ( L.-B. Guyton de Morveau Méthode de nomenclature chimique (1787) 114, the source translated in quot. 1788) < flu- (in fluor fluor n.1) + -ate -ate suffix1; compare post-classical Latin fluat- , fluas (1787 in Guyton de Morveau, or earlier), Spanish †fluato (1795 or earlier; 1788 or earlier as †fluate ), German †Fluat (1801 or earlier), all < French, and compare later fluoride n. In sense 2 apparently shortened < fluosilicate n., after French fluate (1887 or earlier); compare fluate v., fluatation n.In fluate of lime n. after French †fluate de chaux (1787 or earlier).

transitive. To treat (stone) with fluosilicates in order to harden and improve its surface. Cf. fluate n. 2.
