Etymology: < German Akosmismus (1826 or earlier in G. W. F. Hegel, who apparently used it at first in unpublished work, and later (applied to Spinoza's philosophy) in Encyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundrisse (ed. 2, 1827 ) §59) < a- a- prefix⁶ + Kosmos cosmos n.¹ + -ismus -ism suffix. Compare Danish akosmismus (1813 or earlier in different sense, with reference to the philosophy of J. G. Fichte). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăkǫ·zmiz'm) /əˈkɒzmɪz(ə)m/.
