Etymology: < the name of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research) in Dubna, Russia, where element 114 was first produced + -ium suffix.The institute was itself named after the Russian physicist Georgy Flyorov (1913–90). The name had previously been proposed (in 1994) as an alternative name for element 102 (nobelium), and was suggested for various other elements before being approved for element 114.

A superheavy chemical element, atomic number 114, produced artificially by high-energy atomic collisions. Symbol Fl.Previously given the provisional name ununquadium (see un- comb. form), flerovium was first synthesized in 1998, and the name was formally adopted by IUPAC in May 2012.
