Etymology: The normal Scots form of Old English flecgan to put to flight, of which one example is known, if the reading of the manuscript be correct. If not an error for flégan (see fley v.), it may perhaps be a variant of that word, with abnormal doubled palatal and shortening of the vowel, as in reccan to reck, variant of récan ( < *rôkjan).
