单词 fontange
释义

fontangen.

Brit. /fɒnˈtɒn(d)ʒ/, /fɒnˈtɒ̃ʒ/, U.S. /fɑnˈtɑn(d)ʒ/, /fɑnˈtɑ̃ʒ/
Forms: 1600s fountange, 1600s– fontange.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fontange.
Etymology: < French fontange (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1688) < the name of Marie-Angélique de Scorailles, Duchess of Fontanges (1661–81), one of the mistresses (1679–80) of Louis XIV. The duchess is said to have created this headdress by tying together her hair, which had been dishevelled by the wind during a hunting expedition, with a ribbon.
Now historical.
A tall headdress made of ribbons, lace, and linen frills usually supported by a wire frame, in fashion from about 1680 to 1710.
