单词 andrachne
释义

andrachnen.

Forms: 1600s–1800s adrachne, 1600s–1800s andrachne.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin andrachnē.
Etymology: < classical Latin andrachnē purslane (Pliny; < Hellenistic Greek ἀνδράχνη purslane, of unknown origin), apparently showing confusion of meaning with classical Latin andrachlē arbutus, strawberry tree (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀνδράχλη arbutus (specifically Arbutus andrachne), also of unknown origin. In later use perhaps after use as a specific epithet in scientific Latin Arbutus andrachne ( Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed 10, 1759) II. 1024)).In form adrachne after post-classical Latin adrachne (e.g. in 15th- and 16th-cent. editions of Pliny). Hermolaus Barbarus ( Castigationes Plinianae (1495)) observed that the form adrachne rather than andrachne should be used (in the passage describing the arbutus) since classical Latin andrachnē denoted purslane.
Obsolete.
A kind of arbutus, Arbutus andrachne (formerly also called A. adrachne), an evergreen tree native to the eastern Mediterranean which bears edible red berries.
