单词 andaste
释义

Andasten.adj.

Brit. /anˈdasteɪ/, /anˈdasti/, U.S. /ɑnˈdɑˌsteɪ/, /ænˈdæˌsteɪ/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Andastes.
Forms:

α. 1700s– Andaste.

β. rare 1800s Andastae, 1800s–1900s Andastoe.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Andaste.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < French Andaste (18th cent.), shortened < †Andastoerrhonons (plural), denoting the people (1635) < the Huron name for the people, a derivative of the Huron name of Conestoga, Pennsylvania (reflected by French †Gandastogué (1672), also Andastoë ), ultimately < the Susquehannock place name kanahstó:ke (see Conestoga n.). Compare earlier Susquehannock n. In later use (in β. forms) < French †Andastoé, †Andastogué (17th cent.), denoting the people, apparently directly < (French forms of) the place name.French Andaste is disyllabic (with silent final -e ); the trisyllabic pronunciation in English apparently developed as a spelling pronunciation. The β. forms typically occur in historical contexts, with direct reference to early French sources.
Now historical.
