Compare earlier Susquehannock n. In later use (in β. forms) < French †Andastoé, †Andastogué (17th cent.), denoting the people, apparently directly < (French forms of) the place name.French Andaste is disyllabic (with silent final -e ); the trisyllabic pronunciation in English apparently developed as a spelling pronunciation.
