Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fonio.
Etymology: < French fonio (1884 or earlier; 1892 in the passage summarized in quot. 1903) < Wolof foño , apparently < a Mande language (compare e.g. Manding foni , Bambara fini , Koranko fonye ). Compare earlier fundi n.1 and perhaps also the West African forms cited at that entry.
Either of two species of millet cultivated chiefly in West Africa for their edible seeds, Digitaria exilis and D. iburua. As a mass noun: the seeds of such a plant. D. exilis is also called fundi, hungry rice.
