Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fondu.
Etymology: < French fondu technique of painting or printing in which colours gradually merge into each other (1819 or earlier), movement in dance (1919 or earlier), specific uses as noun of fondu (13th cent. in Old French in the sense ‘mixed’, 1685 with reference to painting), past participle of fondre to melt (see found v.3).In β. forms after the French masculine plural adjective form fondus in e.g. couleurs fondus ‘merged colours’; French does not use a plural noun fondus in this sense.
