Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French antestature.
Etymology: < French antestature (1675 in the passage translated in quot. 1676), apparently < ante- ante- prefix + stature stature n. Compare Spanish antestatura (1726 or earlier).
Obsolete. rare.
A fortification or traverse (traverse n. 8) made from sacks of earth or wooden stakes.

1676 tr. G. Guillet de Saint-Georges Acct. Voy. Athens 409 The Antestatures [Fr. Antestatures] are little Traverses or Retrenchments thrown up in haste with bags of Earth.
