Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin antesignarius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin antesignarius (4th cent.), alteration (with suffix substitution; compare -ary suffix1) of classical Latin antesignānus soldier who fought in the front line of a legion < ante- ante- prefix + signum standard (see sign n.) + -ānus -an suffix.
Obsolete (historical and rare).
A group of soldiers chosen to march before and defend the standard.
