Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit anitya.
Etymology: < Sanskrit anitya transient, impermanent < a- un- prefix1 + nitya innate, continual, permanent < the same Indo-European base as Old Icelandic niðr , Gothic niþjis , both in the sense ‘relative, family member’, and probably also Gaulish Nitio- local, indigenous (in names), ultimately a suffixed form of the Indo-European base of in prep. Compare earlier uneternal adj.
Buddhism.
The quality or fact of being transient, impermanent, or mutable; the inherent changeability of physical and mental phenomena. Cf. anicca n.One of the three fundamental aspects of existence, together with dukkha (dukkha n.) and anatman (anatman n.).In Theravada Buddhism the related term anicca n. is typically used.
