Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anistoresia; Greek ἀνιστορησία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anistoresia (1615 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἀνιστορησία ignorance of history (as a Greek word in the classical Latin author Cicero) < ἀνιστόρητος ignorant of history, uninformed ( < ancient Greek ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἱστορεῖν to inquire into (see history v.) + -τος , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ία -y suffix3; compare -sy suffix1.Compare French anistoresie (1641 or earlier).
Obsolete.
Ignorance of history; inaccuracy with regard to historical fact; an instance of this.
