Etymology: < fire n. + bug n.2With sense 1 compare earlier firefly n. With sense 2 compare bug n.2 4a. In sense 3 after scientific Latin Pyrrhocoris, genus name ( C. F. Fallén Specimen Novam Hemiptera Disponendi Methodum Exhibens (1814) 9) < ancient Greek πυρρός reddish, flame-coloured (see pyrrhous adj.) + κόρις bedbug (see coreopsis n.). Compare earlier red-bug n. (a) at red adj. and n. Compounds 1e(a).
