Etymology: < fire n. + flaught n.1 Compare earlier fire-slaught n.It is unclear to what extent this word and the similar-sounding (but unrelated) fire-slaught n. influenced each other. Fire-slaught is attested earlier, but fire-flaught is more common, and some Older Scots authors use both words apparently interchangeably.
