Etymology: < Middle French animosité (French animosité ) courage, ardour, fierceness (late 14th cent.), abuse (16th cent.), persistent hostility towards someone (16th cent.; in later use also ‘pride, arrogance’ (1607), ‘excessive heat in a debate’ (1771)) < post-classical Latin animositat- , animositas wrath, enmity (Vulgate), courage, valour, boldness (4th cent.), energy, zeal (5th cent.) < classical Latin animōsus spirited (see animous adj.) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Old Occitan animozitat (c1350), Catalan animositat (14th cent.), Spanish animosidad (14th cent. as animosidat), Portuguese animosidade (1548), Italian animosità (a1290).
