Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old High German irkuolēn to become cool (Middle High German erkuolen , German †erkuhlen ) < the Germanic base of or- prefix (compare a- prefix1) + the Germanic base of cool v.1 In transitive use replacing akele v. Compare acold v.
Obsolete.
1. intransitive. To become cold, to cool; figurative to decline in ardour or passion. Occasionally in perfect tense formed with to be.
