filsn.2

Brit. /fɪls/, U.S. /fɪls/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1800s fels, 1900s– fals, 1900s– fils.
Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Arabic fals, fils.
Etymology: < Arabic fals, (colloquial) fils small coin, ultimately < Byzantine Greek ϕόλλις , the designation of the Byzantine copper coin < classical Latin follis bag, sack, purse, (plural) bellows, used in post-classical Latin to denote various coins (see follis n.). Compare French †fels (1797). Compare earlier fluce n. ( < the Arabic broken plural form fulūs, now used in sense ‘money’).Old Arabic also had a variant †fuls , which directly reflects the tonic vowel (see tonic adj. 4b) of the ultimate Byzantine Greek etymon.
Formerly: (the local name for) any of a number of small copper coins of varying value used throughout the Middle East, the Byzantine Empire, and parts of India. Subsequently: a monetary unit of Iraq, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, equal in value to one thousandth of a dinar; (also) a monetary unit of the United Arab Emirates (one hundredth of a dirham), and the Republic of Yemen (one hundredth of a rial); a coin of this value.
