Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French filozelle.

Etymology: < Middle French filozelle, Middle French, French filoselle floss silk (1542; 1369 as filloisel ) < Italian filosello (see filosella n.). Compare Old Occitan filosel (1397).The use with reference to the fabric is apparently not paralleled in French until later than in English: early 19th cent. or earlier. In later use in sense 2 reborrowed < French filoselle. The α. forms appear to show classicizing alteration (compare discussion at P n.). Compare Older Scots filosey (1568; perhaps with alteration after say n.¹), and philosane (1581), filosoune (1597), denoting the fabric, all of which may show various alterations of the ending.

1. Floss silk, or silk thread resembling this, used esp. (in later use) in embroidery. Also more fully filoselle silk.
