Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French filon.
Etymology: < French filon vein, lode (1562 in Middle French) < fil thread (see file n.2) + -on (see -oon suffix).Not fully naturalized in English. N.E.D. (1896) gives the pronunciation as (filoṅ) /filɔ̃/.
Mining. Now rare.
A vein of a mineral or metal, a lode; (in later use) spec. a vein that has formed in a fracture of a pre-existing body of rock (= dike n.1 9b).
