Etymology: Partly < answer v. + back adv., and partly < answer n. + back adv. Compare earlier to answer back at answer v. Phrasal verbs.
1. A (typically automated) response to a transmitted message confirming receipt of the message and identifying the device which has received it; a device or system which issues such a response. Frequently attributive.
