Etymology: < film n. + speed n.
1. Photography. The degree of light sensitivity of a photographic film; a numerical measure of this. In later use also: a numerical measure of the signal gain of the photosensor in a digital camera.Originally determined as the rate at which a photographic film would darken when exposed to light of a specified strength.Film speed has historically been expressed using a number of different scales; in 1974 the ISO system was introduced, combining two earlier systems, the ASA and DIN standards.
