Etymology: < aconite n. + -ic suffix, after German Aconitsäure aconitic acid (1827 or earlier; also †Eisenhutsäure, in the same sense, using the vernacular name of the plant as the first element (J. Peschier 1821, in Neues Jrnl. der Pharmacie 5 i.99)). Compare ancient Greek ἀκονιτικός made of aconite. Compare earlier aconital adj.

Of or relating to aconite. Chiefly in aconitic acid n. Chemistry a crystalline tricarboxylic acid existing in monkshood, larkspur, and other plants, and also obtained by heating citric acid.Aconitic acid is propene-1,2,3-carboxylic acid, CH(COOH)=C(COOH)—CH₂COOH. Both cis and trans isomers exist.
