Etymology: < German Ansatz attempt, approach (14th cent. or earlier; 1791 in this specific use in mathematics) < ansetzen (Old High German anasezzen).German Ansatz was formed by analogy with Satz leap, situation (ultimately < the same Germanic base as setzen set v.1) beside setzen set v.1
A mathematical statement which is assumed to be true for a given problem, for the purpose of solving or investigating that problem; esp. a hypothesized solution to a mathematical problem.
