Etymology: < Arabic anṣār (plural noun; c1881 in the specific Mahdist sense), specific sense development of the plural of nāṣir helper, assistant < naṣara to help.
1. Islam. Any of the inhabitants of Medina who aided Muhammad at the time of the Hijra (Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina in 622) and who became early converts to Islam. Cf. muhajir n. 1.
