Etymology: < Middle French ansal used both ways, double (1533 in the passage translated in quot. ?1541¹) < classical Latin ānsa handle (see ansa n.) + French -al -al suffix¹.Compare Cotgrave 1611 (at Anse) ‘vn pot à deux anses, an equiuocation; a word, &c, of double meaning, or whereof a double construction may be made’.

Obsolete. rare.
