Etymology: < post-classical Latin flavi-, combining form (in e.g. flavicomus : see flavicomous adj.) of classical Latin flāvus yellow (see flavous adj.) + virus n. Compare flavovirus n.
Virology.
Any member of the genus Flavivirus of enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses, most of which are arthropod-borne pathogens of mammals and birds, typically causing encephalitis or (often haemorrhagic) fevers, including yellow fever and dengue; (in form Flavivirus) the genus itself. Later also: any member of the family Flaviviridae.The family Flaviviridae includes the genera Flavivirus, Pestivirus (classical swine fever and bovine diarrhoeal viruses) and Hepacivirus (Hepatitis C virus).
