Etymology: Probably < modern Latin Agk(ist)rod(on (coined by A. M. F. J. Palisot de Beauvois 1799, in Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc. 4 381), lit. ‘barb-tooth’, < Greek ἄγκιστρον fish-hook + ὀδούς, ὀδοντ-tooth, former genus name of the snake from which the enzyme is obtained, with alteration of -gk- to -nc- following the usual model for Greek transliteration.

Pharmacol.

An anticoagulant protease that lowers the concentration of fibrinogen by cleaving fibrin in the blood, and is given intravenously in the treatment and prevention of some kinds of thrombosis.
