Etymology: < finger n. + -ly suffix1.In quot. OE after post-classical Latin anularis (of a finger) that bears a ring, (as noun) ring finger (compare annular adj.), in a list of the names of the five fingers; although regularly formed, it is probably the result of a transmission error for either hringfinger (compare quot. eOE at ring finger n.) or lǣcefinger (compare quot. a1100 at leech-finger n.). Compare also:OE Antwerp-London Gloss. (2011) 99 Medicus uel anularis, læce uel goldfinger.
